God, I hope not! I cringe every time she opens her mouth on “The View.”

She was however, incredibly “honored” to introduce Gov. Sarah Palin on Sunday at a Republican rally in Florida.

But she was even more excited about being able to “talk for a full five minutes without being interrupted,” by Joy or Whoopi.

She talked about Palin’s women’s rights views: equal pay for equal work, putting an end to honor killings, aiding women exploited in the sex trade and stopping the sanctioning of the abortion of unborn daughters in other countries.

She decried the fact that “they” are “fixated on her wardrobe,” calling it a double standard and deliberately sexist. But then she turned to Palin and remarked admiringly that the governor “sure is a woman who knows how to dress,” which got some rather sexist whoops, hollers and whistles from the audience.

Hasselbeck added: “I’m most impressed by her accessories, you know, like the flag pin she wears in honor of her son and our military — men and women — fighting abroad. And they fight for our every right to be here today.”

Oh, Ok

She told press, “There isn’t a woman in the world that doesn’t have a friend or a partner who’s actually experiencing some sort of violence against them, so I think although domestic violence hasn’t happened to me personally, I certainly know women who are dealing with this struggle every day.”

Reese noted that domestic violence, “affects women who are famous, who are not famous, women who have money, women who have no money. This is an issue that crosses all boundaries and it certainly affects everyone.”

She also announced the Avon bracelet sale, which finances the charity, and gave one to Maria da Penha Maia Fernandes (a paraplegic woman who suffered at the hands of her violent husband) as a symbol of hope.

Every July, there’s a story in the media describing how some drunken fool got trampled or gored while running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. This week, an American male tourist got gored in the buttocks and had to run to surgery. Yes, it’s no fun to get stomped or skewered on vacation, but these men at least have a choice. The bulls, on the other hand, are prodded into running, panicked, through a gauntlet of crazy, screaming people who get a kick out of taking a swing at them as they go hurtling by. You can’t blame the bulls for trampling and goring. I’d be freaked out too! Many bulls are injured during the run when they fall on the pavement or crash into walls. And they all are tortured and killed with swords by matadors in the bullfighting ring later that evening. Most tourists have no idea that the bulls stampeded through the streets during the day are slaughtered in the ring at night.

Last year, women in Pamplona, demanded their own version of the run complete with cows instead of bulls. Women have been allowed to take part in the San Fermin bull-running for some years but they still represent a tiny minority. Why would anyone want to do this anyway?

Since 2002, people have come together from all over the world to protest the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona. According to a Gallup poll conducted in October 2006, 72 percent of Spaniards show no interest in bullfights – up from 54 percent in the 1980s. It is tourists who are keeping this cruel tradition alive.

Drawing from traditional styles of Mexican music and fusing it with pop-rock sensibility, the electrifying quartet features Spanish lyric songs of vocalist and guitarist Sandra Lilia Velasquez, the driving accordion melodies of Maria Elena and the unbeatable rhythm section of bassist Inca B. Satz and drummer Ani Cordero.

Since the release of their debut album “Siempre Hay Salida” in 2006, the band has been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, Billboard Magazine, The New Yorker, Latina Magazine and NPR. Pistolera has also been very vocal about immigrant rights and their contribution to this country. They performed last May at the Union Square Rally in NYC in support of immigrant rights and justice for all human beings.

Their sophomore album ” En Este Camino” will be released nationwide on August 5. Pistolera will play Central Park’s Summerstage on August 9th. Make sure you catch this fiery funky band!

A little after noon on Saturday, a proud and powerful senator from New York, Hillary Clinton, officially conceded the democratic party nomination to Senator Barack Obama.

Thousands arrived at the National Building Museum in DC to hear her bid farewell as she ended her historic presidential campaign. Like Clinton, many were profoundly, visibly disappointed but ever-defiant. Many recognized the symbolic distance she had travelled. In her words:

As we gather here today, the 50th woman to leave this Earth is orbiting overhead. If we can blast 50 women into space, we will someday launch a woman into the White House.

Perhaps the American patriarchy isn’t ready. But her campaign has undoubtedly blazed a trail upon which other women might build more substantial byways. She has certainly found her voice and we hope to hear its echo in years to come:

Although we weren’t able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it’s got about 18 million cracks in it. And the light is shining through like never before, filling us all with the hope and the sure knowledge that the path will be a little easier next time.

Clinton is asking her supporters to back Obama. Will or should we/they play ball?

Slate’s Fraywatch cites one woman’s insight:

Obama is not the candidate they are looking for. In fact he is their recurring nightmare; Obama represents the guy who was promoted over them because he was smooth, cool, etc. not because he did the hard work, paid his dues, and yes, waited his turn.

A lot of women had to live through that and, rightly or wrongly, they actually empathize with Clinton and feel what she is going through. These women did the work for their daughters, they don’t need Obama to do it for them.

Another responder writes:

The media was so focused on the idea that Hillary Clinton acted as if the nomination was hers by right, that they failed to see the arrogance and obnoxiousness of her opponent’s campaign. That elitism (for lack of a better word) was not lost on the rest of us. In the 40 years I have followed American politics, never have I seen a candidate (and her supporters) treated with such disrespect by the media.

What’s a woman to do? As Clinton said, there’s a lot at stake and we’ve come a long, long way. Is it time to just hold your nose and get the Republicans out? Or is there a higher principle at stake here?

On a night when Gossip was playing at Webster Hall, two all-female bands stole away a piece of the fan base (heavy on the faux-hawk-sporting, i-D-reading rocker ladies) to New York’s legendary Knitting Factory. Boyskout and Girl in a Coma played the Factory’s Tap Bar on April 15, with the Isles opening.

Boyskout, hailing from Brooklyn via San Francisco, plays punk-inflected indie rock that has been compared to the early Cure, but the band’s latest single, “You Act Strange,” is danceable enough for pop. Boyskout was featured on the July 2007 cover of Curve, and JIVEMagazine.com quoted a fan, “Watching their live show is like getting laid.” Is it? I didn’t get laid, but maybe someone did. After an audience member screamed, “We wanna have your babies!” singer/guitarist Leslie Satterfield shrugged, smiled, and said, “All right.” The band’s energy built up on the hot, sweaty little stage. Synthy keyboards and unabashedly feminine vocals gave a fetishistic edge to Boyskout’s dark, driving rock.

San Antonio-based Girl in a Coma has had a great year, opening for Morrissey and entering the Billboard Charts with their debut album, Both Before I’m Gone, which was also an iTunes feature. Girl in a Coma has a history at the Knitting Factory, where in 2006 the band impressed Joan Jett and was promptly signed to her label, Blackheart Records. The audience crowded up devotedly as singer/guitarist Nina Diaz’s powerful voice alternately thundered and soothed. Bass from Jenn Alva and drums from Phanie Diaz (Nina’s sister; the three bandmates are high-school friends) filled out the band’s gritty, dreamy sound. The verdict: a good night for sweaty women and an even better night for rocking ones.

Girl in a Coma is currently touring the U.S. in support of the new album. For those of you in the New York area, Boyskout is playing Williamsburg’s Luna Lounge on Friday, April 25.
