latifaalbum.jpgQueen Latifah considered naming her new hip-hop album The L Word “just to mess with people’s heads.” The New Jersey rapper/actress has endured much speculation about her sexuality because she doesn’t discuss her personal life and played a lesbian in the 1996 film Set It Off. “L was gonna stand for love though or La,” she laughs. “Since people want to play games, I like to jab back sometimes just for fun, but I’m like, ‘Nah, that’s too much energy wasted.’ ”

For her latest project, the New Jersey singer says that she will return to her rap root by working with LL Cool J and Dr. Dre. “Dre helped me write some stuff. He wrote some stuff with me and Ludacris wrote a record for me,” Latifah says.

Latifah calls the new album (due in December) “banging” and plans to hit the road next year.

Blend the old-school R&B sound with a quirky hybrid of hip-hop and pop and you get Little Jackie, the creation of genre-defying singer-songwriter Imani Coppola and programmer Adam Pallin.

With a nod to the soulful Motown rhythms of the past and a sneer to many of the social and cultural issues that consume the public today, Coppola has crafted an album of musical sugar and spice, filled with sweet, saccharine-tinged melodies and spicy, bold commentaries.
